Stowe Sugar Slalom: A Celebration of Spring on Skis Since 1939

Up on the mountain, soft snow and sunny afternoons signal the end of winter and the start of spring – an exciting time of year in Stowe. Spring offers some of the best skiing and riding conditions of the season. Spring skiing is also a time for having a little fun as longer, warmer days bring excitement in anticipation of the summer season.

Stowe is home to several time-honored events including the Stowe Sugar Slalom, one of the most recognized alpine races in America. Stowe Mountain Resort once again hosted the Sugar Slalom over the weekend (April 7 and 8). Organized by the Mount Mansfield Ski Club, the Stowe Sugar Slalom is a two-day event that attracts more than 1,000 avid racers and several hundred spectators. The event draws racers of all abilities, including young junior racers and even select members of the U.S. Ski Team. All participants are invited to dress up in costumes best representing the theme, a Spring Celebration.

Originating as a celebration of the arrival of spring and the tapping of maple trees, the Sugar Slalom is held in a Mardi Gras atmosphere complete with music, barbecue on the hill, fantastic ski racing and festive costumes. A slopeside party keeps with the theme of celebrating Vermont maple sugaring season. The race also features maple sugar-on- snow, doughnuts and pickles at the finish line – the perfect spring treat!

Stowe’s eclectic après scene of acclaimed restaurants and bars are a popular stop following the post-ski barbecue in the parking lot. Refer to the Stowe Events Calendar for other events taking place.
