SUMMARY:Taking Time: A solo exhibition by Chakaia Booker
DESCRIPTION:Taking Time: A solo exhibition by Chakaia Booker\nJune 22 – October 19\, 2024\nOpening Reception Saturday\, June 22\, 2024\, 4-7pm \nGallery Hours: 10am-5pm\, Monday – Friday\, Saturday 10am-3pm \nThe Current is pleased to announce the opening of Taking Time: A solo exhibition by Chakaia Booker. Internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist Chakaia Booker is best known for pioneering the use of recycled rubber tires as a raw material for monumental sculptural works. A fixture of the New York City East Village art scene since the early 1980’s\, Booker has exhibited across the US\, in Europe\, Africa\, and Asia with works included in more than 40 museum and private collections. \nBooker’s work has spanned decades with an intentionality of practice and purpose. She chooses discarded tires to create beauty from detritus\, and elegance from industry in a way that both simply is\, and yet has strong underpinnings of social and environmental justice. Her solo exhibition at The Current\, both inside and out\, highlights beauty and hardship\, tradition and caretaking\, and dives deep into Booker’s practice\, highlighting a monumental outdoor sculpture\, while inside The Current\, her photographs\, prints\, and indoor sculptures fill the galleries. The work asks the viewers to take time to listen\, lean in\, contemplate\, heal\, work\, create\, and be. \nBooker’s signature style stems from a modular approach to building an artwork through layering regardless of media or scale. Primarily a sculptor\, Booker works with rubber\, bronze\, and ceramics alongside a dedicated practice in painting and printmaking. “At my core I am an inventor\, looking for new forms and movements to express my ideas\, methods to manipulate materials and processes\, and ways to connect with an ever-changing audience.†– Chakaia Booker \nTaking Time: A solo exhibition by Chakaia Booker is curated by Rachel Moore. \nThe Current is your center for contemporary art. Exhibitions of acclaimed international and emerging artists. Adult and youth art classes and private lessons. School tours\, film screenings\, lectures\, outdoor exhibitions\, and summer art camps. All brought to you through the generous support of our town\, our members and our sponsors.

SUMMARY:Friday Night Music with John Lackard at Stowe Cider
DESCRIPTION:Stowe Cider welcomes John Lackard for their Friday Night Music series on July 12 from 5 -8 p.m. \nThis is a free show\, first come first served\, and you’re welcome to stay for as long as you’d like. No outside food or drink is allowed. \nAbout John: \nA sound and style that could easily have come from Memphis or Chicago is perhaps what makes John Lackard and his Green Mountain origin so unique. Not just another trip on the “Blues Bandwagon†that is so ever popular today. This is the real thing. \nHis apparent connection and understanding began when his father brought the Boogie Woogie piano and records into the household\, and started a career that has lasted over half of a century. John’s first real musical instrument at the age of five was a Hohner harmonica. Being only eight when he went to work selling greeting cards for points toward a plastic electric guitar. It was followed by a Silvertone “Stella†12 string acoustic guitar when he was nine. During this time\, John moved next door to Buddy Truax\, jazz guitarist of “Buddy Truax And The Playboysâ€. This early influence was enhanced by Buddy’s sons who played bass and drums\, providing a rhythm section to jam with in addition to Buddy’s informal “lessonsâ€. By age fifteen he was ready for his first professional stage appearance. Touring New York and New England for a few years led to a stint with Sam the Sham\, sit-ins with James Cotton\, Jimmy Rogers and Bob Margolin\, working with Cotton’s drummer as Ken Johnson and Co.\, in addition to opening shows for Jimmy and James as well as countless others. After which Jimmy declared “That boy kicks the hell out of the Blues!†James simply stated\, “The Blues is in Vermontâ€. Currently in process of recording a CD\, one of the tracks titled “I Wanna Go Back†can be heard on the compilation album “Best of The Green Mountain Blues Vol. 1â€. The future promises a continued extensive touring schedule that previously prompted a radio D.J. to proclaim the John Lackard Blues Band “The Hardest Working Blues Band in New Englandâ€.
