Vermont is home to many beautiful, historic towns that radiate small-town charm in their own unique way. Stowe is centrally located to many of these popular destinations that make it a perfect home base for your stay in the Green Mountains. Spend a few days exploring and enjoying Stowe or extend your stay to incorporate a day trip or two to these other areas. Here are a few trips that are within or just over an hour from Stowe.

Burlington

Roughly 45 minutes away, Burlington is anchored along the shores of Lake Champlain and offers incredible waterfront views. The Burlington waterfront and Church Street Marketplace are popular areas for guests to explore. Burlington is also home to many vibrant events, including live music and concerts. Discover all this “big little town” has to offer in an easy day trip from Stowe.

Montpelier

The capital of Vermont sits just about 30 minutes south of Stowe. Walk around the grounds at the capitol building and explore the wonderful shops and restaurants that sit on and off Main Street and State Street. Hubbard Park is a popular outdoor space to explore, with over seven miles of hiking trails and numerous picnic areas as well.

Waterbury & Mad River Valley

The scenic Green Mountain Byway (Route 100) is one of the most popular scenic drives in the state. The communities of Stowe, Waterbury, and the Mad River Valley are linked by the legendary Vermont Route 100. This unique stretch of Route 100 offers incredible views, outdoor recreation, unique shops and restaurants to offer the full Vermont experience. Waterbury is about 15 minutes from Stowe and it’s about another 20 minutes to the Mad River Valley area.

Stowe is a four-season destination at the foot of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak. One of the best things about Stowe is that you can enjoy world-class outdoor adventure, historical and cultural activities, and small-town charm—from mountain to Main Street—along with stunning views around every corner.

And the Green Mountain Byway can take you there. This 71 mile-long corridor along Vermont Route 100 and beyond connects Stowe with other northern Vermont towns on the Vermont State Historic Register, including Waterbury, Morristown, Morrisville, Hyde Park, Johnson, Jeffersonville and Cambridge. Like Stowe, they maintain a vibrant cultural identity rooted in the tradition of rural Vermont and offer visitors access to many hidden gems.

Read on to find 4 reasons why Stowe and the Green Mountain Byway should be on your bucket list this summer and fall.

1) Iconic Scenery Among The Green Mountains

Recently named one of the “Top 10 Prettiest Mountain Towns in New England” by Yankee Magazine, Stowe’s scenic views are sure to elevate your Instagram feed. Mount Mansfield is the perfect backdrop for summer hiking adventures and mountain activities year-round, but especially in the warmer months. Right off the byway is Vermont’s tallest waterfall: Moss Glen Falls, an ideal location for a short and scenic hike. Trapp Family Lodge, originally built in 1950 and currently run by the family that inspired The Sound of Music, offers sweeping mountain views from its property from which you can get a trail pass to hike, bike, take a tour, and more.

2) Small-Town Charm Steeped in History

It’s no wonder Stowe, Vermont was named one of “16 Best Small Towns in America” by Travel + Leisure for the second year in a row. Between the northern Green Mountains and the Worcester mountain range lies the heart of Stowe: an historic downtown village with beautifully maintained buildings including quaint shops, restaurants and cafes, inns and hotels, and Vermont’s tallest church steeple. Stowe is also home to three classic Vermont covered bridges including the famously haunted Emily’s bridge, also known as the Gold Brook Covered Bridge. Built in 1844, Emily’s Bridge is the oldest Howe Truss bridge in Vermont.

3) Vibrant Arts & Culture Scene

Surround yourself with the wonders of the unique arts and culture scene in Stowe, Vermont. Watch our town come alive as our Vermont vibe is mixed with lively music, unforgettable performances, and jaw-dropping art pieces. Summer in Stowe is filled with rich culture, creative events like Music in the Meadow and one-of-a-kind exhibitions like Exposed. Be sure to add some vibrancy to your Green Mountain Byway itinerary!

4) Abundant World-Class Outdoor Recreation

There are plenty of recreation opportunities in Stowe for all ages and abilities. With an extensive trail network, it’s no wonder hiking is the most popular activity in the area. Vermont’s historic Long Trail (LT) is the country’s oldest footpath. Built in 1910 by the Green Mountain Club, the LT runs 273 miles between the Massachusetts and Canadian borders and crosses over Mt. Mansfield and into Smugglers’ Notch and beyond. After a windy and scenic drive through Smugglers’ Notch along the Green Mountain Byway, you’ll find hiking and biking trails, zip lining, disc golf, paddling adventures, farm stands and farm-to-table dinners, and more. Nearby, the Gondola SkyRide and Auto Toll Road at Stowe Mountain Resort are great ways to see the valley in the summer and fall. Another big draw is the Stowe Recreation Path, a flat 5.3-mile walking and biking path that meanders a river, connecting the downtown village to shops, restaurants and lodges along the way, and ending at a picturesque covered bridge. Paddling is also a great way to take in the scenic views.

There are endless possibilities in the charming mountain town of Stowe, Vermont. Check off your bucket list and experience the best of Vermont this summer and fall, and discover some of the things that truly differentiate Stowe right off the Green Mountain Byway.

Ensure you can see for yourself why Stowe is the perfect backdrop for your fall adventure. Read our tips below for planning your visit to Stowe, Vermont next fall.

1) Time your trip.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when “peak” foliage will take place as it varies each year depending on a variety of factors, such as rainfall and temperatures leading up to and during the fall. Generally speaking, you’re bound to see some “prime” color between mid-September and mid-October. View our FAQs for viewing fall foliage in the area. Be sure to consider our signature events that happen every fall, such as Trapp Oktoberfest and the Stowe Foliage Arts Festival.

2) Book your stay as soon as possible.

The best time to start looking for and book a place to stay is four to six months in advance of your visit to ensure your trip is as fantastic as the fall foliage. For the best availability, consider booking as far as a year out when some properties have released their inventory in advance.

3) Choose your views.

From hiking Vermont’s tallest peak to hunting for ghosts at the state’s oldest covered bridge, there are many unique ways to view the foliage in Stowe. From the historic Village to the scenic Mountain Road, discover fall activities and attractions that capture the interests of everyone in your party in the state’s largest town area-wise with more than 50,000 acres that are covered with color. 4) Dine with a view.

Stowe offers more than just breathtaking views in the fall; it’s also known for its world-class dining! Stowe was named by Fodor’s Travel as one of the “World’s 10 Best Ski Towns for Foodies.” Savor the flavors and experience some of the local restaurants by dining with a view of the colors. As fall is our busiest season of the year, be sure to plan ahead closer to your travel date for a seamless experience. Many of our restaurants will have wait times and may require reservations in advance.

Fall in Vermont is a season like no other. The award-winning vibrant foliage draws in leaf peepers from all over. One of the best places to take in the colorful landscapes and picturesque Vermont scenes is the coveted Route 100 corridor. Stowe, Waterbury and the Mad River Valley are all nearby along this scenic route and each offer a plethora of scenic drives as you travel through the towns. Named one of “15 Incredible Spots to See Fall Foliage Across New England” by Town & Country, you will want to add this road trip to your fall bucket list.

Stowe

Fall is the perfect time to explore the nearby landscape and discover hidden scenic gems in Stowe, Vermont. The typically less-traveled back roads and hidden avenues attracts visitors and locals looking for vibrant colors and views blazing with autumn color. One of the best ways to see foliage in Vermont, is to simply drive around the Stowe area to places like Sterling Valley, Stowe Hollow, Elmore and beyond. If you’re headed through Smugglers’ Notch,  be sure to drive up Mt. Mansfield on the Auto Toll Road at Stowe Mountain Resort for the most breathtaking views from Vermont’s highest peak! The Go Stowe Scenic Drives Guide will take you through the countryside, under covered bridges and to some of the best foliage viewing spots.

Waterbury

As you leave Stowe down scenic Vermont Route 100, also known as the Green Mountain Byway in this area, discover more of Waterbury by venturing off the well-traveled path of Route 100 on backroads including Gregg Hill or Guptil Roads. Whether you want to wind along the water, travel through the trees, or admire the historic architecture, there are plenty of pretty drives around town. Make a day of it by adding in hikes or stopping for snacks along the way.

Mad River Valley

Drive under the colorful treetops along the next section of Route 100 going south towards the Mad River Valley. When “MRV” locals head out to explore and experience other parts of Vermont you might hear them say that “we’re going VermonTouring.” The Mad River Valley’s central location in the heart of the Green Mountains makes it an ideal launch pad to explore Vermont. With a little planning, you’ll be amazed at how much there is to see. Whether you’re looking for a short drive around town for an hour or two, or a full-day excursion, there are some classic tour loops emanating from the Mad River Valley.

In addition to scenic drives, there are a variety of outdoor activities that provide unique vantage points for leaf peepers.
