Stowe is a four-season destination at the foot of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak. One of the best things about Stowe is that you can enjoy world-class outdoor adventure, historical and cultural activities, and small-town charm—from mountain to Main Street—along with stunning views around every corner.

And the Green Mountain Byway can take you there. This 71 mile-long corridor along Vermont Route 100 and beyond connects Stowe with other northern Vermont towns on the Vermont State Historic Register, including Waterbury, Morristown, Morrisville, Hyde Park, Johnson, Jeffersonville and Cambridge. Like Stowe, they maintain a vibrant cultural identity rooted in the tradition of rural Vermont and offer visitors access to many hidden gems.

Read on to find 4 reasons why Stowe and the Green Mountain Byway should be on your bucket list this summer and fall.

1) Iconic Scenery Among The Green Mountains

Recently named one of the “Top 10 Prettiest Mountain Towns in New England” by Yankee Magazine, Stowe’s scenic views are sure to elevate your Instagram feed. Mount Mansfield is the perfect backdrop for summer hiking adventures and mountain activities year-round, but especially in the warmer months. Right off the byway is Vermont’s tallest waterfall: Moss Glen Falls, an ideal location for a short and scenic hike. Trapp Family Lodge, originally built in 1950 and currently run by the family that inspired The Sound of Music, offers sweeping mountain views from its property from which you can get a trail pass to hike, bike, take a tour, and more.

2) Small-Town Charm Steeped in History

It’s no wonder Stowe, Vermont was named one of “16 Best Small Towns in America” by Travel + Leisure for the second year in a row. Between the northern Green Mountains and the Worcester mountain range lies the heart of Stowe: an historic downtown village with beautifully maintained buildings including quaint shops, restaurants and cafes, inns and hotels, and Vermont’s tallest church steeple. Stowe is also home to three classic Vermont covered bridges including the famously haunted Emily’s bridge, also known as the Gold Brook Covered Bridge. Built in 1844, Emily’s Bridge is the oldest Howe Truss bridge in Vermont.

3) Vibrant Arts & Culture Scene

Surround yourself with the wonders of the unique arts and culture scene in Stowe, Vermont. Watch our town come alive as our Vermont vibe is mixed with lively music, unforgettable performances, and jaw-dropping art pieces. Summer in Stowe is filled with rich culture, creative events like Music in the Meadow and one-of-a-kind exhibitions like Exposed. Be sure to add some vibrancy to your Green Mountain Byway itinerary!

4) Abundant World-Class Outdoor Recreation

There are plenty of recreation opportunities in Stowe for all ages and abilities. With an extensive trail network, it’s no wonder hiking is the most popular activity in the area. Vermont’s historic Long Trail (LT) is the country’s oldest footpath. Built in 1910 by the Green Mountain Club, the LT runs 273 miles between the Massachusetts and Canadian borders and crosses over Mt. Mansfield and into Smugglers’ Notch and beyond. After a windy and scenic drive through Smugglers’ Notch along the Green Mountain Byway, you’ll find hiking and biking trails, zip lining, disc golf, paddling adventures, farm stands and farm-to-table dinners, and more. Nearby, the Gondola SkyRide and Auto Toll Road at Stowe Mountain Resort are great ways to see the valley in the summer and fall. Another big draw is the Stowe Recreation Path, a flat 5.3-mile walking and biking path that meanders a river, connecting the downtown village to shops, restaurants and lodges along the way, and ending at a picturesque covered bridge. Paddling is also a great way to take in the scenic views.

There are endless possibilities in the charming mountain town of Stowe, Vermont. Check off your bucket list and experience the best of Vermont this summer and fall, and discover some of the things that truly differentiate Stowe right off the Green Mountain Byway.

As we begin to peek out of winter hibernation, be the first to experience Stowe’s spirit come alive this spring! Whether you are looking to glide through the soft snow or sample our freshly tapped maple syrup, spring in Stowe is for you. Take advantage of the longer days with sunnier skies and lodging deals. Read on for activities to fill up your spring days only in Stowe.

Play Under the Spring Sun

Swoosh! Strap on those boots and click in your skis or board to experience an East Coast spring on the slopes. March and April are known to have some of the best skiing and riding of the season. Named #1 Ski Resort in Eastern U.S. by Ski Magazine, Stowe Mountain Resort caters to all skier and rider levels. Book a lesson and a pass now to get ahead on planning.

Not into skiing or riding? Snowshoeing in the woods is a great way to refocus and recharge. Equipment rentals are available at Stowe’s outdoor outfitters. Alternatively, get knee-deep into area streams for early spring fishing. Local guides and experts from The Fly Rod Shop and Catamount Fishing Adventures offer tours and advice to make your spring fishing trip a memorable one.

Tap into Spring

Your taste buds will be screaming to sample our local taps—maple or brew—this spring. Prepare yourself for some sticky, syrupy fingers. It’s well worth it since Vermont knows maple syrup—the state produces nearly half of the crop in the U.S.! In February and March, maple trees are tapped, launching the local maple sugar houses into production. Take a tour and learn how the sweet stuff is made. Be sure to select and stock up on our authentic Vermont maple syrup from Trapp Family Lodge, Nebraska Knoll, and Stowe Maple Products.

Another way to “tap” into spring is by sampling local craft beverages. Find homemade beer made right at Idletyme Brewing Co. and von Trapp Brewing Bierhall. Not a beer fan? Sip on a glass of wine from Dedalus Wine or Cork Restaurant & Natural Wine Shop. Field Guide Lodge also hosts wine tastings with the local Ellison Estate Vineyard. And for cider lovers…look no further than Stowe Cider or Cold Hollow Cider Mill.

Spring Into Stowe’s Culture & Wellness

Watch Stowe’s creative life spring into action, and be inspired by Stowe’s vibrant arts and culture scene. Attend a performance at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center or check out our local glass blowers like Little River Hotglass Studio. Take a moment for yourself this spring to unwind from a busy winter. Relax with ease at one of our local spas such as the Spa at Stoweflake or the Spa at Spruce Peak, or book an appointment with Empower MedSpa this season.

Spring on Sweet Deals

Spring is appropriately a time for sweet deals. Take advantage of lodging deals like the 96 Hour Sale that ends February 11. Stowe, Vermont offers lodging options for every taste and budget—from boutique hotels and slopeside resorts, to condos and B&Bs. Book early to secure the best available lodging rates of the season.

Are you ready for warmer weather? We are too! Start planning your spring break today. Request a quote or contact one of our vacation planning experts for assistance.

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation day, recognizes the end of slavery in the United States and honors Black history across the nation. Juneteenth is a long-standing holiday commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States, dating back to June 19, 1865.

In 2008, Juneteenth was adopted as a state holiday in Vermont. While it is celebrated in most states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Congress recently passed a resolution that was signed by the President to establish Juneteenth National Independence Day.

This year on June 19, our neighboring town of Montpelier—also Vermont’s state capital—will be commemorating Juneteenth with a celebratory evening on the State House Lawn with the theme, Living Liberation. The celebration and reflections will be focused on the word ‘Liberation’ while sharing Black History in Vermont and making space to discuss the continued impacts of systemic racism in the state. This community event will feature speakers and performers from across the state along with food available for pre-order from Black businesses and home cooks. Similar to last year’s event, this casual celebration on the lawn offers opportunities to connect.

In the city of Burlington, Juneteenth will be celebrated all weekend long with musical performances, food vendors, educational opportunities, museum exhibitions, art installations, and fun. The city’s inaugural Juneteenth event is organized by the City’s Office of Racial Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, and is a chance for all to celebrate Black liberation in the United States both in-person and online to align with current safety protocols.

While Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19, there are opportunities to make our state a welcoming and inclusive place to visit and live by educating yourself on the impacts of racism and also supporting Black-owned businesses throughout Vermont.

A panel discussion organized by Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, “Being a BIPOC Artist in Vermont Part 2: The Intersection of Art and Spirituality.”

Stowe celebrates the influence and contributions of Black Americans throughout the year. The Lamoille Art & Justice Project, led by people of the global majority (or PGM*), is a collaboration that merges public art, oral histories, podcasting, and literature to foster connection and community for PGM in Vermont across generations. This project seeks to engage local artists, educators, students, allies, and organizations in advancing racial equity and justice in Lamoille County. Among the many collaborators is Will Kasso Condry, lead mural artist and illustrator of Juniper Creative Arts, who is a visionary and Afro-futuristic artist well-known for his use of bold color and layers. His life’s work centers on using mural arts as a vehicle for community-building, activism, beautification, and healing. He will be one of several speakers participating in a virtual panel discussion, Being A BIPOC Artist in Vermont Part 2: The Intersection of Art and Spirituality, that will take place on Wednesday, June 23 at 7 p.m. The free panel discussion, organized by Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, will explore the reality of racial and social equity and unique challenges faced by BIPOC artists in Vermont.

*The Lamoille Art & Justice Project adopts the term “People of the Global Majority” (or PGM) as an alternative to BIPOC to honor the fact that indigenous, brown, and black people make up the majority of the global population, decenter whiteness, and reject the “othering” or “minoritizing” of PGM in our language and communities.
