Planning a trip to Stowe, Vermont? Ensuring you pack the right essentials can make all the difference in enjoying everything this charming town has to offer. To help you get the most out of your visit, we’ve put together a must-have packing list. With these items in your suitcase, you’ll be ready for an unforgettable and seamless Stowe experience.

Layers

Regardless of what season you visit, layered clothing options are always a good idea for your trip to the Green Mountain State. The alluring summer months can welcome both cool and warmer temperatures and this trend can continue into the fall. While it is always good to carry extra layers and other provisions when venturing to higher elevations, rain-slick layers are recommended regardless of your plans in case of an impromptu shower. Winter brings snow and cold temperatures, necessitating thermal layers, insulated jackets and waterproof outerwear for both skiing and strolling through the charming town. Spring can be a mixed bag of wintery conditions or a more traditional spring awakening, which definitely requires a nimble wardrobe. By layering your clothing, you’ll be prepared for any weather Vermont has to offer, while staying comfortable and stylish year-round.

Good Shoes

We know this one is pretty straight forward no matter the destination you choose to visit, but Stowe is no exception. A good pair of comfortable shoes will ensure happy feet at the end of an action-pack visit. From outdoor adventure to walking around town, be sure to outfit your feet with your comfiest shoes to carry you all throughout Stowe. If you are planning on more advanced outdoor recreation, make sure to pack appropriate gear, particularly footwear. Waterproof hiking boots are great for hiking all year round and if you are exploring trails during the winter, crampons (ice cleats or spikes) are highly recommended. Our mountain mainstays know how important a good pair of winter boots are to keep your feet nice and toasty on a cold winter day.

Refillable Water Bottle

Whether you have a lot of strenuous outdoor activities planned or aiming for a more leisurely stay, reusable water bottles are a must for staying hydrated while you are traveling. Help us encourage more sustainable travel by packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics. Many lodging accommodations have added filling stations in common areas for travelers to access water without having single-use bottles available. If a traditional size water bottle is too bulky to pack, there are many new collapsible alternatives that are a lighter option for travel.

Backpack or Reusable Shopping Bag

Packing an extra backpack or reusable shopping bag when visiting Stowe, Vermont is essential for both convenience and sustainable travel. For day-to-day excursions, an extra backpack is perfect for carrying essentials like water bottles, snacks and layers of clothing, ensuring you’re prepared for whatever adventures come your way. A reusable shopping bag comes in handy for spontaneous purchases at local shops as Vermont no longer allows single-use plastic shopping bags. Embracing this eco-friendly practice not only supports Stowe’s commitment to sustainability but also allows you to enjoy your travels with a lighter environmental footprint. With an extra bag, you’re always ready for hikes, picnics and shopping trips, making your visit to Stowe more enjoyable and environmentally conscious.

Camera

While it’s true that people have a camera at their fingertips with their smartphones, bringing another dedicated camera can capture the finer details and preserve all the memorable moments from your trip to Stowe. Capture the breathtaking beauty of our picturesque destination. Whether you’re hiking scenic trails, exploring charming downtown streets, or relaxing by a serene lake, you’ll find countless photo opportunities. Don’t miss the chance to document the stunning views and unique experiences that make Stowe a truly special place to visit.

Now that you have an initial packing list, start planning your visit to Stowe. Browse activities and accommodations or book online here.

Stowe’s craft beverage scene draws travelers from near and far to sip and sample some of the best locally crafted brews around. When it comes to quality and quantity of craft beverages, Vermont’s local brewers, vintners, distillers and cider makers lead the industry, and Stowe is home to some of the best. We’ve compiled a tasting road map of some of our favorite craft beverage spots in Stowe. Always secure a designated driver or spread your tastings out over the course of your trip for safe and happy sampling.

Cold Hollow Cider Mill
Cork Wine Bar
Stowe Cider

When you exit off of I-89, Cold Hollow Cider Mill (3600 Waterbury-Stowe Road) should be the first stop in your craft beverage tour for some hard cider tasting. Located right off of Route 100, sample different seasonal hard ciders and pair it with a fresh cider donut or other homemade goodies. Non-alcoholic cider is also available and just as delicious.

Continuing North on Route 100, you will make your way into Stowe’s historic downtown. Get out and stretch your legs then pop in to Cork Natural Wine Shop (35 School Street) for a glass of wine within walking distance to the iconic Stowe Community Church. Ellison Estate Vineyard (57 Mountain Road), a family run winery with locations in Grand Isle and Stowe, recently opened a new tasting room in the heart of downtown Stowe, near the intersection of Route 100 and Route 108.

After you’ve explored Main Street, follow Mountain Road (Route 108) to Stowe Cider (17 Town Farm Lane) for a flight of hard cider. Try some of their staple headliners or experiment with one of their rotating seasonal flavors. Stowe Cider is a popular venue for live music so be sure to mark your calendar for any upcoming shows.

Idletyme Tap & Tavern
The Alchemist
von Trapp Brewing Bierhall

A little further up Mountain Road, Idletyme Tap & Tavern is a local favorite, featuring quality craft beer brewed on site. Located right off the Stowe Recreation Path, Idletyme is the perfect spot to grab a pint and a bite to eat or try their staple ‘Brewski Sampler’ to experience a variety of flavors.

Up next, The Alchemist Brewery (100 Cottage Club Road) is close by on Cottage Club Road, which pops up just after where Mountain Road splits with Luce Hill Road. Visit the Beer Cafe year round or enjoy the seasonal Beer Garden May through October. Brewery tours are available, but require a reservation.

Backtracking to Luce Hill Road, follow the signs all the way up the hill to the von Trapp Brewing Bierhall (1333 Luce Hill Road) to experience “a little of Austria, a lot of Vermont.” Whether you prefer your beer light or heavy, hoppy or sweet, smooth or bold, you’ll find something to satisfy your palate at von Trapp Brewing.

Savor Vermont
4 Points VT: Brewery Tours

GUIDED TOURS

While some of these brew houses offer on-site tours, another way to customize your craft beverage tour of the area is through guided tours like Savor Vermont and 4 Points VT: Brewery Tours. Experience the best local brew spots from friendly, knowledgeable locals. No need to worry about driving, because they have got you covered.

10 Reasons to Start Fatbiking in Stowe https://gostowe.com/blog-10-reasons-to-try-fatbiking/ Wed, 14 Feb 2024 16:25:51 +0000 https://gostowe.com/?p=46763 Guest authored by Ranch Camp, Stowe’s full-service mountain bike shop, fast-casual eatery and tap room. Guest authored by Ranch Camp, Stowe’s full-service mountain bike shop, fast-casual eatery and tap room.

Fatbiking is baked into our DNA here at Ranch Camp, and since ~2010, we’ve been on a mission to bring fatbiking to the masses through events, reviews and impromptu fatbike parties. For a lot of riders, winter is a time to take a break from the bike, reset and focus on non-bike activities, but here in Vermont, it’s always bike season. Fatbiking is much like mountain biking, but on a bicycle with wide tires made to easily pedal across snow. The Stowe area offers a wide range of terrain that caters to all levels and abilities. We’re of the opinion that riding in the winter should be high atop your list of priorities for the winter. So we’re here to provide you with a comprehensive list of reasons why now is the time to give fatbiking a try.

1. Fatbiking is the perfect complement to skiing and snowboarding.

Fatbiking and snow sliding are not mutually exclusive. The reality is, when the ski conditions are not ideal, the fatbike conditions are generally really good; loud, icy ski trails equate to smooth and fast singletrack…the perfect conditions for fatbiking.

2. You probably have most of what you need already.

Fatbiking doesn’t require a bunch of highly specialized gear; a beanie under your summer helmet, maybe an old set of ski pants, and you’re ready to roll. Wanna get kitted? There’s a ton of super cool gear specific to fatbiking, but you can comfortably break into fatbiking with what you’ve already got in your winter gear closet.

3. Fatbikes are good for more than just fatbiking.

Fatbikes have developed over the past few years, finding a nice balance between capable climbing and confident descending. As a result, fatbikes have evolved into all-terrain, four-season bikes for a lot of riders. With the addition of a set of 29+ wheels and tires (i.e. wheels and tires that measure 29” in diameter and ~3” wide), fatbikes make great bikepacking rigs. Many fatbikes come with all of the braze-ons and mounts needed for affixing bags. Headed to the beach this summer? Air those tires down and take advantage of miles of uninterrupted coast for an epic ocean-front ride.

4. Now available in pedal-assist.

Fatbiking can be challenging when conditions aren’t perfect and for many people, that’s a dealbreaker. However, electric bikes like the Norco Bigfoot VLT are readily available and provide the boost that many of us need to make fatbiking that much more accessible. Pedal-assist fatbiking is virtually guaranteed to put a smile on your face, regardless of conditions.

5. Fatbikes are easy and more affordable than you think.

For many of us, the reluctance to buy a fatbike is just a simple dollars and cents issue. Thankfully, modern fatbikes are more affordable and of higher quality than ever. A fully rigid fatbike, which is all the bike many of us will ever need, will run you between $1000 and $1500. Even with the addition of a dropper post and studded tires, you’re still likely spending less than $2k. Fatbikes are also refreshingly simple by comparison to a full suspension mountain bike. Without all of the pivots, bearings, seals, dust wipers, and air cans, fatbikes literally and figuratively have fewer moving parts. Sure, they still need some love like any other bike, but assuming you’re riding in decent conditions (i.e. snow, not mud), drivetrains are just less subject to wear than riding in summer dust and the components, when cared for, will treat you to many years of happy fat-tire shredding.

6. What’s old becomes new again.

If you want to see your local trail network in a whole new light, saddle up your fatbike. One of the things we love about fatbiking is that it forces us to slow down and see things we might otherwise miss during a summer ride. For example, Stowe’s Cady Hill Forest is quite literally out our backdoor here at Ranch Camp. We ride the trails almost daily during the summer, but come winter, these uber-familiar trails take on a whole new aesthetic. Winter riding affords long line of sight, mandates slower speeds and by default, yields more time to relish in our surroundings. We guarantee you’ll see something you’ve never seen on your local trails from aboard your fatbike.

7. Build those bike handling skills.

Fatbiking is as different from mountain biking as nordic skiing is from downhill skiing, but that’s a good thing. Sure there’s some overlap, but at the end of the day, these two styles of bikes behave VERY differently. Spending time on a bike with 5” wide tires, pedaling through snow and ice, invariably leads to a sharpening of skills and a feeling of increased confidence when you get back on the MTB come spring.

8. Night riding during the winter is utterly sublime.

We all know night-riding is a super fun way to cap off the summer riding season when the days get short and temps get cold. However, when the snow starts falling, that’s when night riding is at its best. Modern bike lights pack a ton of lumens and won’t break the bank. With a few riders in a line casting a few thousand lumens on some freshly fallen snow, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better way to spend your evenings this winter.

9. We’re in the golden age of grooming.

Thanks to the advent of a handy little product called the Snow Dog, fatbike trail grooming is better than ever. Pair that with increased support from municipalities, nordic ski areas, and many of the mountain biking associations across New England, fatbiking opportunities have never been greater. If your local trail network is not yet grooming, this is a great time to get involved. Check out Vermont Mountain Bike Association’s trail conditions page to stay up to date with winter trail statuses.

10. Last but certainly not least: it’s wicked fun!

While cycling, despite its reputation for being a free-spirited endeavor, has maintained an undertone of seriousness and competitiveness, fatbiking is the complete opposite. Nobody’s taking themselves too seriously when they are on something called a “fatbike,” which makes it the perfect activity for newcomers. Fatbiking events are the perfect setting to introduce yourself to this fun-loving community.

The list could go on and on, but that’s 10 good reasons to give fatbiking a try next time you’re in the Stowe area. Not ready to take the plunge? That’s okay. Give Ranch Camp a call (802) 253-2753 to line up a demo, take one for a spin, or learn more about upcoming fatbiking events.

Vermont’s four-season destination, Stowe welcomes visitors from all over the world all year round. With an abundance of outdoor recreation and a thriving arts and culture community, Stowe has a rich history and local Vermont flavor that makes it a top destination for first-time and returning guests. Learn more about what Stowe has to offer in every season to help you plan your trip.

Winter

Stowe is best known for being the quintessential New England mountain town with some of the best skiing and riding in the east. In addition to alpine excellence, visitors can experience a wide variety of outdoor recreation, including skating, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fat biking, dog sledding and more. Stowe is home to the first cross-country ski center in the country at Trapp Family Lodge.

If the snow and the cold are not your preference, enjoy the mountain town lifestyle from the comfort of the indoors. Cozy up by the fire for après ski libation and relaxation. Spend some time popping in and out of local shops, museums and galleries in our historic downtown area. After all the excitement, unwind with a relaxing visit to one of our world class spas or wellness centers.

Spring

Historically one of the more quieter times of year, spring is the perfect time to visit Stowe if you’re looking to avoid the crowds. Often referred to as Vermont’s sweetest season, spring temperatures mark the start of maple sugaring season. Guests can experience one of Vermont’s greatest traditions as they watch maple syrup being made by some of the best local sugar houses.

Spring skiing and riding, as well as other outdoor recreation are still available depending on the weather and time of year you visit. While not all trails are open this time of year depending on conditions, road biking and rail trails are popular amongst cycling enthusiasts. Craft beverage tastings and tours are popular year round, but spring is a particularly great time to brewery hop.

Bonus Tip

The weather in New England is ever changing, but the transition between winter and spring brings added stipulations. Often referred to as “mud season,” the ground becomes soft from thawing temperatures and runoff snowmelt. Not all areas of our destination will be viable places for desired activities depending on the conditions. Plan ahead and check trail closures and conditions before heading out. In the event of muddy conditions, stick to hard surfaces or paved areas for outdoor recreation.

Summer

The Green Mountains come alive under the Vermont summer sun. Summertime in Stowe is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise, with activities to keep you busy from dawn until dusk. Explore world class hiking and mountain biking trails and take in the beautiful summer scenery. Visit Vermont’s tallest waterfall or spend your days paddling on our beautiful lakes and rivers.

Nothing says summer like outdoor dining and our local restaurants are serving up great food and even better views. Indulge with a true Vermont maple creemee or grab your favorite flavor at the Ben & Jerry’s Factory. Always be prepared for all types of New England weather even in the summertime. Check the forecast in advance and plan your wardrobe and your itinerary accordingly!

Fall

The most colorful time of year to visit Stowe, where the lush green scenery transforms to a vast display of vibrant brilliance. Stowe is without a doubt a popular New England destination for viewing fall foliage, making it one of the busier times of year. Home to some of the best scenic drives and stunning vistas, Stowe is widely known as fall’s color capital.

With extraordinary events, endless outdoor activities and tasty fall treats, there are so many ways to enjoy your cozy, fall getaway in Stowe. Peak foliage is typically anywhere from the last week of September to the first two weeks of October. If peak foliage times are sold out or out of your price point, the last two weeks of October are just as beautiful and are a quieter time to experience fall foliage.

If you are planning a trip, but have more questions about our destination during a specific season or if you are looking for lodging or activity recommendations, give our local vacation planning experts a call at (800) 467-8693. Ready to book? Browse lodging rates here.

Stowe Mountain Resort is an internationally renowned four-season destination. Surrounded by majestic Mount Mansfield—the highest peak in Vermont—and Spruce Peak, Stowe is filled with activities and adventures for every season and every guest. Looking to make the most of your next trip to Stowe? Read on for tips to plan an unforgettable ski vacation in Stowe, Vermont.

Stowe. A World Of Its Own.

At Stowe Mountain Resort last year, we celebrated replacing the Mountain Triple with the Sunrise Lift, a high-speed, detachable six-passenger lift that originates in the Mansfield Base Lodge parking lot – allowing guests unbeatable, direct access to Vermont’s highest peak. The Sunrise Lift enhanced the resort experience with increased uphill capacity by 100 percent, eliminating the steep hike to the base of the former lift, plus improved reliability on windy days and direct access to beginner and intermediate terrain choices. The Sunrise Lift was part of Vail Resorts’ 2022-23 Epic Lift Upgrades at 12 resorts across North America. This was Vail Resorts’ biggest single-year investment into the ski and snowboard experience, nationwide. “The Sunrise Lift is the first-ever six-passenger chairlift for Stowe, which has been home to many lift innovations and firsts throughout our 86-year history,” said Bobby Murphy, former general manager of Stowe Mountain Resort and now VP/GM of Vail Resorts’ property Beaver Creek Resort in Colorado.

The East is Epic

Vail Resorts also continues to offer the Epic Day Pass, which allows guests access to world-class resorts at pre-season pricing for up to 65 percent off when compared to a lift ticket. The Epic Day Pass is perfect for those who plan to ski and ride from 1-7 days throughout the winter season. In effect, skiers and riders can build their own pass and also choose Epic Flex Pay as a convenient payment option. Compare all Epic Pass offerings on the Epic Pass website. And keep in mind – Epic Passes make it easier than ever for those new or revisiting the sport, with Epic Mountain Rewards for 20 percent off food, group ski and ride school lessons, equipment rentals and more.

There’s much more than just skiing & snowboarding on Vermont’s highest peak. Indulge your taste buds across a plethora of restaurants and dining options both on and off-mountain. Current Epic Pass Holders even receive 20 percent off at select food & beverage outlets on-resort. On the events side, be sure to check out some exclusive Pass Holder events taking place at Stowe this season, plus fan-favorites like the Spruce Peak Lights Festival and New Year’s Eve Celebration, The Stowe Derby, Sugar Slalom and more. Music lovers, head over to Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center for a wide range of live music and other special events.

For those that need rentals, look no further- from high performance demos to beginner equipment, we have you covered. Off- mountain, explore other activities, like ice skating at the Village at Spruce Peak outdoor ice rink or ascend Vermont’s highest peak via the Gondola SkyRide. For those looking for something a bit more relaxing, try cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at our Nordic Center, or find serenity at one of many spas in Stowe. It’s all here waiting for you.

#NextStopStowe

The 2023-24 winter season will see the return of our tiered parking program including a mix of complimentary and paid parking, carpooling incentives, and increased public transit. Our goal is to do our part to help alleviate congestion on the Mountain Road leading to the resort and to give our guests a variety of arrival options. All paid parking is managed through Interstate Parking via the website, parkstowe.com.

All season long starting November 24, 2023 until March 31, 2024, Green Mountain Transit offers a complimentary bus service, the Mountain Road Shuttle, from downtown Stowe, up Mountain Road, and to several stops around Stowe Mountain Resort. This is especially convenient for lodging guests staying locally. Park your car and let us help with your journey.
