5 Ways to Celebrate Spring in Stowe
March 15, 2018 by STOWE AREA ASSOCIATION
March signals the transition from winter to spring, and in Vermont, that can mean a range of weather! Longer days and sunshine are often mixed with snow. The town awakens from winter hibernation with spring skiing, festive events and a touch of sweetness in the air from sugaring operations. Read on to learn five ways to celebrate spring in Stowe:
1. Spring Skiing and Riding
The first day of spring is only a few days away, but with 5’ of snowfall in the past 8 days, skiers and riders are taking advantage of the fresh powder. March in Vermont can also bring spring-like weather and conditions, with sunny blue skies and soft snow. The recent snowfall will build a stronger base to last into the warmer months and extend the ski season. Spring is also a fun time of year with events like 80s Retro Weekend. Dress up in bright colors and onesies and barbecue at Stowe Mountain Resort.
2. Après anything
After a day on the slopes, trail or whatever adventures your day brings, it’s time to unwind with friends and après like a local. Enjoy Vermont’s finest beverages at one of several destinations in Stowe for après ski. Ranked one of the “World’s 10 Best Ski Towns for Foodies” by Fodor’s Travel, Stowe is home to a variety of dining establishments and craft beverage producers. Sample craft beverages on the Stowe Craft Bev Trail and other local flavors on the Stowe Tasting Trail. Stowe is also home to The Matterhorn Restaurant & Bar, named the “#1 Après Ski Bar in the U.S.” by USA Today.
3. Savor Vermont’s Sweetest Season
From late February through early April, Vermont’s hillsides are dotted with sap buckets and lines, while dormant sugar houses begin the sugaring process. With an abundance of maple trees, it’s no surprise Vermont is the largest producer of maple syrup in the United States. Vermont contributed 46% of the maple syrup produced in the U.S. last year – that’s 1.98 million gallons just last year! Though Stowe’s local sugar houses host visitors any time they’re boiling sap, the Maple Open House Weekend is a great opportunity to visit and experience the process first-hand. Samples will be available. ‘Tis Vermont’s sweetest season indeed!
4. Trek on the Stowe Recreation Path
Take in sunny, blue skies and picturesque scenes as you cross-country ski or snowshoe the Stowe Recreation Path (or “Rec Path” for short), a 5.3-mile one-way paved path that meanders along the Mountain Road (VT Route 108). Equipment rentals are available along the Rec Path, as well as several shops and restaurants. Parking lots provide direct access to the Rec Path, which is especially convenient for families and young children. The Rec Path is also popular for running, biking and rollerblading in the summer and fall.
5. Get Cultured
Many of Stowe’s art galleries and museums are featuring art classes and spring exhibits including A Reverent Eye and Deep into Nature at West Branch Gallery & Sculpture Park. At Helen Day Art Center, view The Infinite Shapes of Water and Ordinary Time exhibits. Edgewater Gallery is also hosting an opening reception and artist talk with Galen Cheney, a Vermont-based painter whose new work will be on display through May 4.
