Why Skiing Early Is the Best: My 5 Favorite Experiences

November 15, 2018

by MELISSA DAY, GUEST SERVICES MANAGER, STOWE MOUNTAIN RESORT

The excitement of season start, that first dose of holiday cheer, the joy of having trails to yourself – these are some of the simple pleasures of exploring Stowe in the early winter season. I’m lucky to call this place home, because there is no place I’d rather be (and ski) in the early season. Seize the Season and catch up on some quality time with yourself, with nature, and with your beloved family and friends by celebrating the most magical time of the year.

1) Celebrate Stowe’s Opening
You can feel it in the air the minute you step into town the week leading up to Opening Day. The snow has started to fall, you bought your season pass, Stowe Mountain Resort’s Opening Day is upon us, and people couldn’t be happier. If there was ever a time to celebrate, Opening Day is it – and this year is going to be even more exciting with the arrival of the Epic Mix app at Stowe. I’m going to challenge my friends and family to see who can get the most pins before Christmas!

2) Find the Best Deals
With the holidays drawing near, it’s important to save some money where you can, which is why I remind my friends and family to always book early for the best savings and take advantage of lodging offers. Another tip from my 6 years of managing the ticket office lift tickets (19 total at Stowe Mountain Resort!) is to book ski lessons early – at least 7 days in advance – for your best deal.

3) Enjoy Trails to Yourself . . .
Stowe’s early season offers quieter trails which creates more opportunity for unbelievable moments. As a Stowe local and a mother of three boys, my favorite time to ski is first thing in the morning. My boys and I head to the mountain while it’s still dark out just to catch first chair and watch the sunrise from Mt. Mansfield’s peak.

4) . . . and a Peaceful Town
This town has some of the best dining and leisure options in the area. Some of my favorite Stowe picks include the breakfast at Butler’s Pantry (don’t miss their biscuits), local boutiques and stores on Main Street, and walking around on the Rec Path. Some of my Mountain Road favorites include BunyaBunya, Stowe Kitchen Bath & Linens  and Green Envy. Our vibrant community definitely makes this town special, but it’s in between the busy winter holidays I find myself reflecting and appreciating the real beauty of my home.

5) Catch Some Winter Cheer
From ice skating at Spruce Peak, tree lighting ceremonies and seasonal performances at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, to other festive events, the weeks leading up to the December holidays are just magical here. Historic downtown Stowe is postcard perfect and the ideal backdrop for your holiday family photos. Don’t forget that getting into the holiday spirit is even easier after waking up to several fresh inches of snow on the ground.

It’s time to celebrate winter!
