Things To Do in Stowe Before Winter Arrives

October 30, 2020

by GO STOWE

While things look different this year, Stowe’s beauty never fades, even when its fabled foliage has fallen from the trees and the weather cools. During this traditionally quieter time of year in Stowe, you’ll find more space to dine, shop, recreate and even save money on lodging. Check out our favorite “stick season” activities in Stowe in the late-fall before winter arrives and the snow flies!

Shop for the holidays.

Get a head start on holiday shopping at more than 40 country stores, apparel boutiques, craft galleries and sporting goods stores. Expand your Vermont horizons and continue shopping along the legendary Route 100 into Waterbury and the Mad River Valley for more of the best shopping along this scenic corridor.

Insider Tip: Shop small during the Small Business Saturday event on Saturday, November 27, 2021.

Savor the flavors.

Named the “#1 Ski Town for Foodies” by Fodor’s Travel, you can spend a whole day stopping at area specialty food stores, like Laughing Moon Chocolates in the Village. Grab an ice cream cone at the Ben & Jerry’s Flagship store, and be sure to stop by Cold Hollow Cider Mill and not only watch how cider doughnuts are made, but also take a dozen for the road!

Idletyme Brewing Co.
Enjoy
coveted local craft beverages.

Stowe is home to some of the best craft beverage producers in Vermont, which has more craft breweries per capita than any other state. Located nearby are local favorites such as Stowe Cider, Idletyme Brewing Co. and von Trapp Brewing. Explore (one or all!) on your visit to Stowe.

Insider Tip: enjoy tastings on a guided brew tour, or explore the best craft beverages the region has to offer.

Get cultured.

While Stowe is mostly known as a ski town in the winter, its thriving and vibrant arts community of local, national and international artists are inspired by Stowe’s natural beauty year-round. Find unique works of art at a local gallery anytime of the year. From painting, photography and sculptures to jewelry and glass–discover something unique and intriguing on exhibit.

Explore the great outdoors.

What better place to take in the fresh mountain air? Explore a trail, or try a new activity with the help of a local expert guide and discover hidden places in the woods. There’s even a chance to ski or snowboard in the fall! Stowe Mountain Resort opens up on November 19 with world-class snowmaking and grooming. It’s also not too farfetched for snow to fall in November! A walk through Smugglers’ Notch on Route 108, which is closed to automobiles during the winter months, is always a spectacular treat.

Insider Tip: Winter equipment rentals and leases are a great option especially if you’re just getting into a sport or a frequent Stowe visitor, skier or rider.

Relax and unwind.

What better place to take some time for yourself to unwind and recharge among the fresh mountain air? Stowe’s spas are a great place to focus on overall wellness. Alternatively, pick up food to-go and find a scenic spot for a picnic with views of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak, along the Quiet Path just off the Stowe Recreation Path.

Insider Tip: Find spa and other specials that area businesses may offer throughout the year.

Check out vibrant events.

Stowe features events happening daily. The fifth annual Dine Stowe restaurant week takes place November 7 through November 13, 2o21. Enjoy a wine tasting or take a family history tour at the Trapp Family Lodge. Be sure to check the calendar often as fun new events are added throughout the season.
